Also, the Windows taskbar is basically a tabbed experience, albeit not a very good one.

While they are at it, all the application developers should stop writing their own GUI toolkits. If you're on Windows, use Windows Forms. If you're on Linux, use GTK+. If you're on OS X, use Carbon or whatever. Don't go creating a new slider just for the hell of creating a new slider!

Great post, sir! I've been meaning to pull away from Facebook and even Google for quite some time, I've just feared trying to find a replacement for Gmail and Google Reader, two services I really do depend on since I haven't found any even remotely good alternatives.

Due to my current living situation I can't exactly set up a server to run all this stuff for me, especially due to Alaska's monopolistic ISPs that took away our unlimited bandwidth and charged us more. I think since I've got a Dreamhost account with "unlimited" data/bandwidth I'd actually feel safe hosting my own "cloud" via their servers. Not exactly hosting all your data yourself, but I trust Dreamhost more than the billion dollar corps selling my data to advertising agencies and who knows what else to who else.

Keep posting on your mission and I'll keep reading (RSS feed powars) and getting ideas for doing the same. I'm totally down, the internet is not safe! I actually like the idea of throwing out FB and Twitter for a blog anyway, it's just a matter of sticking to that blog (for once.)

Hi Michael,
You might want to check out Diaspora - www.joindiaspora.com - it's a decentralised, open source, Facebook alternative. You can actually host your own Diaspora, although it's in early beta and isn't feature rich (yet). :)

Cheers!

It's great to see more people leaving the big services and taking back control of their privacy, their information and their lives.

I've personally deleted my twitter account in the last few days, and trimmed down my Facebook friends list as well. I've deleted my Google account (which served no purpose to me at all), and I've moved to hosting my own email years ago.

The next step for me is to move all the stuff I currently host on a VPS onto my own home server, so that I know exactly where all my data is. I'm not going to do that until I have a very good Internet connection (bring on the NBN!) and a foolproof backup plan.

Great work on this fantastic article!
