Why I won't send recruitment agencies .doc files

Other than the fact that everyone hates recruitment agencies when applying for jobs, I have some fairly solid arguments on why I won’t provide a Microsoft Word file for my Resume and cover letter. If you won’t accept my resume in PDF format, I will ask if I can print it and mail it to you.

First and foremost, PDF allows me to know that any operating system and PDF viewer can read my resume and still present it the same way. With the Microsoft Word format, I have no way of knowing if my resume is being viewed the same. Different software and even different versions of Microsoft Word renders documents differently and formatting completely changes if a different printer is used with a weird paper size or origination.

The second reason is because recruitment agencies tend to like to change your resume to their formatting and modify what is written on your resume, before they pass it on to the employer. Although PDF documents doesn’t stop them from copy the text into their own formatted template, it sure does slow them down. I’d much rather that my resume stays in the same condition all the way through to the employer.

The final reason is because my resume is created and rendered in LaTeX, so producing a Microsoft Word document at the same time as my current resume is relatively time consuming and hard. I shouldn’t be forced to use Microsoft Word to apply for jobs.

That said, company HR teams should get less lazy and actually do some work. You don’t need recruitment agencies these days with the internet, and even if the company does use a recruitment agency at least post the company name and location (not just Queensland) on the ad. I don’t want to waste my time applying for .net startup companies or jobs in locations I can’t commute to or live at.

Life

I couldn’t let January be wasted with one useless post, so I may aswell make it two. A bit of a slow start but I’ve been busy. A few things have happened in the last 3 weeks, including me getting a new chair, finishing season 2 of Dexter, getting a second server, and accepting UNI. (Yeah I know that paragraph sucked balls in the grammar department, anyway, moving on)

I’ve accepted an offer to CQU – Rockhampton UNI for Information Systems, but I’m doing is externally, so I can work at the same time. Although I’ve accepted I haven’t selected my course yet, because I can’t seem to work out this damn site. I’m going to give them a call tomorrow.

A friend of mine from work has gotten me to watch Dexter season one and season two, and boy it’s good. I started to feel sorry for Dexter, and really like the story line. It gets so intense at parts and it’s a great show. I really enjoyed it.

The other two lesser points is that I have a second server http://treee.internaluse.net/ and I have a new chair for my desk (which I have put the arm rests on backwards, and CBA fixing it).

Basically that’s all that’s exciting in my life this month, and the rest has been work.

Last weeks of school

First day back from a so called 2 week holiday, which I really hated. I hated even more than usual. Over the 2 week holiday I worked for Data #3, for RTSS (Rio Tinto Shared Services) at BSL (Boyne Smelters Limited) for a much large pay than you typical KFC shift. Which is why my blogging rate has declined. It was nice working, compared to the usual grind of school.

The thought of how annoying school is compared to the work force killed me the whole time, although the day wasn’t all that bad. For school I have an English assignment that requires reading a biography about a person and then using that info to create a radio broadcast like clip. I’ve decided to do Richard Stallman, which is the creator of GPL and GNU and stuffes. His Bio is awesome so far and loving it, half way through chapter three and can’t wait to read the rest.

I suggest you have a read and check out his driving force to defeat closed source operations. You can get it here It’s a really good read and it’s released under GPL so you can download it for free :>.

In other news I got a Nvidia 8600GT graphics card, which I’ve put in my dads computer so I can play these new games, that my Macbooks Intel GPU couldn’t cope with. This calls for a LAN party to test it out, which will occur this weekend. We have aircon in the house now, so keeping the rooms cool will be easy now.

Swam in the pool today for the first time this season with a few of my mates. It was good fun and a good cool down. I expect it to get very hot this year.

Over and out.
